What is Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) & How Can It Help with Chronic Pain
Todays episode on my podcast I am talking about Chronic Pain and ways to heal with Traditional Chinese Medicine or TCM.
I have been interested in TCM
since the early 90's. Honestly, I was always progressive in my thinking
around conventional Western medicine versus TCM or Traditional Chinese
Medicine. This type of healing has been
around for over 2,000 years and it is still practiced today so clearly they
must be doing something right to continue to have people heal this way.
And what way is that? What is considered traditional Chinese
medicine?
Traditional Chinese medicine includes acupuncture, diet, herbal
therapy, meditation, physical exercise, and massage. date
back at least 2,200 years, although the earliest known written record of
Chinese medicine is the Huangdi neijing (The Yellow Emperor's Inner Classic)
from the 3rd century bce.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine
(TCM), there are five elements, or five phases.
The theory outlines the relationship between the different elements in
nature and the life force, or "qi," that flows through them. The
basic elements are wood, fire, earth, metal, and water.
The basic philosophy of Eastern medicine practitioners is to treat the whole person—encouraging a healthy body to prevent illness and
speed recovery.
The basic theory of Chinese medicine attempts to explain the nature of life cycles and disease
changes. It includes five theories: Yin and Yang, the
five elements, how to direct one's strength, zangfu (internal body organs), and channels.
